Leveraging Digital Platforms for Urban Refugee Employment Case Study

Aug 8, 2024 | Research

As part of a partnership between the Jobtech Alliance and BrighterMonday Uganda, a research study was conducted in Kampala, Uganda with two key goals:

1) Enhance the sector’s knowledge of refugee skills, capacities, and job preferences, as well as the barriers they encounter in obtaining work
2) Inform BrighterMonday’s strategy and product offerings to best serve the needs of this underemployed population

The research approach utilized a combination of methods, including focus group discussions with 44 refugees from 6 countries: Sudan, Somalia, Democratic Republic of Congo, Burundi, South Sudan, and Ethiopia/Eritrea. Interviews with key stakeholders in the refugee employment ecosystem, and an analysis of data on over 450 refugees collected by Mercy Corps in 2023. The findings from this multi-faceted study provide valuable insights that can help improve employment outcomes for refugees in Uganda. This study highlights the key takeaways on how to leverage digital platforms for urban refugee employment, as well as understanding the skills, needs, and challenges faced by this population.
